This is a course that trains personnel for working in chemical industries as technologists. The course equips the trainee with practical skills for working in industrial quality control laboratories, advanced research laboratories, laboratory management and analytical mind demanding situations. Safety for individuals working in the laboratories equipment maintenance and best laboratory practices are emphasized.

Graduates of this course qualify as second years for bachelor of technology in analytical chemistry. Both theory and practicals are emphasised. The trainee undertakes a closely supervised industrial attachment to expose them to real working situations. To ensure the learners can apply the acquired skills and knowledge they undertake a trade project as part of the examination and training.

Diploma in Applied Biology.

The student applying for the course must have a mean grade of C- at KSCE and they must have passed in science subjects.

Admission is done at the beginning of each calendar year.

Course content

The course is intensive with many subjects that are undertaken in theory and practical lessons. They are as outlined:

Examination

This is a course that takes three years after which the students sit for a Kenya National Examinations examination.

In the course of study the students undertake internal examinations which include two Continuous Assessment Tests, assignment and end of term examination per term. At the end of each academic year they sit for a stage examination that determines entry to the next year of study.

Field visits

Besides classroom learning student go for trips which enhance their understanding of the course content. Some of the areas of interest include:

-The marine park,

-Mamba village.

-Kenya Agricultural Research Institute

– Kenya Medical Research Institute

Attachment

The students go for a three month attachment in some of these places and others where they apply the knowledge learnt in class and also they also get to meet equipment that may not be available for teaching in college.

Mode of Examinations;

There are internal examinations administered by the institute each term and at end of stage, and final external examination administered by Kenya National Examination Council.(KNEC) examinations include written exams, practical exams and project work. Coursework assessments in the institute constitute 30% of the final grade while 70% is the final examination. Industrial attachment is also a mode of assessment.

Entry Requirements;

A mean grade of C- for diploma course and D+ for certificate, at Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) or equivalents as determined by Kenya National Examination Council.
